Botox – What Is It and How Does It Work?
You may have heard of the popular trend of getting Botox injections, but what is Botox and how does it work?
According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery botox is a neuromodulator. These are wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin used to treat several conditions such as wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, sagging skin, and others.
Botox works by blocking signals from the nerves going towards the muscles. This stops the muscle from contracting to relax and soften the lines from wrinkles. As it stops the signals from nerves, Botox is also able to treat other conditions such as excessive sweating, muscle spasms, migraines, and aging skin.
Botox can be done in just a few minutes without the need for anesthesia. It generally takes 7 to 14 days to take full effect. Patients are advised to avoid alcohol for at least a week before the procedure and not to take aspirin or any anti-inflammatory medications two weeks prior.
As a provider of aesthetic and plastic surgery in Westminster, California we also administer other neuromodulators aside from Botox such as Xeomin and Dysport. All of these neuromodulators are FDA approved.
